fossilized fish from the famous Lower Cretaceous Santana Formation, approximately 110 million years old. Here in the federal state of Ceará in north-eastern Brazil, the deposits of a shallow inland lake made of fresh and brackish water extend over a huge area. The site, which has been known since 1819, has provided a large number of different fossils over the past two centuries. The fish fossils in particular are found in limestone geodes, from which they have to be uncovered by splitting and subsequent preparation. Some of the fish are preserved in their entirety, which is extremely rare due to the fragility of these animals.A few years ago, Brazil issued a general export ban for fossils, so that there have been no new finds on the market since then . The specimens we offer come from an import a few decades ago, when export from the country was still possible. Some of the geodes are back before the preparation merged or provided with small additions.
