This rare deep-sea sea urchin was only described in 1935 by Prof. Hyato Ikeda of the Kyushu Imperial University in Fukoka. Little is known about his way of life to this day. Its spines, which are so morphologically different, are interesting and little is known about their function. They may be used primarily for camouflage.
