The woody pericarps of these tropical trees are more commonly used in floristry. After falling from the very tall trees, they mold and rot very quickly in the tropical climate. The name Java olive probably goes back to the large, black, olive-like seeds of the fruit, which are more reminiscent of large, saturated ticks. The trees of the genus Sterculia are used in forestry as useful trees, and they are also a supplier of natural rubber (Karaya).
