The group of horn corals (gorgonians, sea fans), which includes about 1200 known species, hides a polyphyletic group of different stick-forming polyps, whose skeleton mostly consists of the elastic gorgonine and lime. This skeleton is covered by a periostracum in which the individual polyps are embedded. Some species have been proven to occur at depths of up to 4000 meters.
