Mountain mahogany grows into deciduous trees up to 30 m tall with trunk diameters of up to 2 m. When unripe, the woody fruit resembles a cigar in shape. Only in the ripening process does the fruit body open its outer shell to release the large winged seeds and is strongly reminiscent of a half-peeled banana, hence its common name "wood banana".
