Cymbiola nobilis is native to the South China Sea between Taiwan and Singapore and grows up to 20 cm tall. This very thick-shelled and heavy snail shell with its individual markings is particularly interesting due to the protruding dark brown protoconch, the embryonic whorls at the top of the shell. In contrast to most other mollusks, the larvae of this species do not move freely in the plankton and so the occurrence of this species is limited to individual, separate areas. In each of these areas, the animals develop their own color patterns.
