Beautiful polished pair of ammonites from Majunga in northwestern Madagascar. The median section reveals the interior of the chambers of the phragmocone, which are partially filled with sediment, but often with calcite crystals that subsequently grew in the cavities. Under the most difficult conditions, local fossil collectors dig in manholes at this site for these fantastic ammonites. Since it is more than 50 km to walk to the nearest motorable road, these ammonites are usually only offered as specimens that have been detached from the rock. The transport of large steps with a lot of adhering rock is simply not feasible.
