Beautiful Cleoniceras besariei with an opalescent shell from Majunga in north-west Madagascar. Under the most difficult conditions, local fossil collectors dig in manholes at this site for these fantastic ammonites. Since it is more than 50 km to walk to the nearest motorable road, these ammonites are usually only offered as specimens that have been detached from the rock. The transport of large steps with a lot of adhering rock is simply not feasible. The straight edge of the mouth of the ammonite results from the restrictive regulations in Madagascar, which only allow fossils to be exported if the stone has been processed in some way in order to create value in the country. The resourceful Madagasse manages with a saw cut.
