Water buffalo were domesticated and used in agriculture probably as early as 5000 years ago. Estimates of the number of water buffalo left in the wild vary between 200 and 4000 specimens, although it is completely unclear to what extent genes from domesticated water buffalo have been introduced into these populations over the millennia. The approximately 150 million domestic water buffalo are divided into about 75 different breeds, one of the most important of which - the Carabao living in the Philippines - can be recognized by the crescent-shaped horns.
