Next to the coconut palm, the palmyra palm is the most extensively used palm species. The fruits provide juicy, sweet flesh and an edible core. Palm wine and sugar are extracted from the flowers. The leaves serve as the material for any kind of wickerwork. A fiber called bassine can be extracted from the palm tree. Sago is obtained from the marrow of the roots. Small plants are dried and completely ground, resulting in a valuable flour. And last but not least, the leaves were used as writing material for so-called palm leaf manuscripts in the past. The three nuts are in this fruit shell.
