Spondylus Versicolor (German: Golden Stache Auster, English: Golden Thorny Oyster) was first described by Schreiber in 1793 and belongs to the family of the spondylidae (sting oxtern). This type of shell is widespread in the tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific and lives as a Benthian organism in depths of up to 25 meters. The striking housing of Spondylus Versicolor can be golden yellow to reddish, but also occurs completely white specimens. The strong spines on the surface give the shell a striking, structured appearance. Like other spiked oysters, it is firmly grown with the surface, often on coral reefs or rocky soils.
