This fossil ammonite, Orthosphinctes (Ardescia) proinconditus, was described by Wegele in 1929 and belongs to the family Ataxioceratidae. As a typical representative of the cephalopods, it displays the characteristic coiled shell form. The specimen originates from the Kimmeridgian stage of the Upper Jurassic (Malm Gamma), approximately 155 million years old, and was found near Bischberg in Upper Franconia (Bavaria, Germany). The greenish hue of the stone core is due to the inclusion of the mineral glauconite. Fossils like this offer an impressive insight into the ancient diversity of ammonites – an extinct group of marine animals.
