Hexagonaria hexagona belongs to the Disphyllidae family and the Hexagonariinae subfamily. These fossil corals, which belong to the extinct group of Rugosa (tetracorals), are around 390 million years old and date from the Devonian period. Rugosa are a subclass of Hexacorallia (six-rayed anthocyanins). This impressive example of a Devonian coral is exposed from the surrounding Devonian reef limestone at the site in Morocco. The mostly silicified corals often appear inconspicuous in their original state. Only by carefully removing the weathering layer and then polishing does the fascinating inner workings of the coral become visible. This processing reveals the characteristic structure and natural beauty of the fossil in all its glory. With their geological significance and aesthetic appeal, such fossils are an impressive testimony to the marine life of the Devonian period.
