This interesting bivalve is the only extant species of the genus Glossus. The vortices that are rolled forward and the spherical shape give the mussel its unique, heart-like appearance. The species lives in deeper water from 50 meters on muddy and sandy bottom. Although it is in great demand as a foodstuff, it can only be fished with trawl nets and is therefore rarely available.
