The horseshoe crab is one of the oldest living creatures on Earth, more closely related to spiders than to true crabs. It inhabits shallow coastal waters down to depths of 40 meters and can reach lengths of up to 60 centimeters. Its diet consists mainly of clams, snails, and worms, with small squid occasionally included. Of the four species existing worldwide, all are the only extant members within the order Xiphosura. These animals are considered living fossils, with fossil records dating back to the Silurian period, around 440 million years ago.
