The distribution area of the Brazil nut trees is in the rain forest of tropical South America. Although the nuts are highly sought after, the tree resists all attempts at cultivation. As a rule, the fallen, very hard-shelled and resistant fruits of agoutis are gnawed open and the nuts are exposed. Only then does germination usually take place and a new tree can grow.
